ACCESS is pleased to offer a 1-year fellowship in nephrology and extracorporeal renal replacement therapy.  The fellowship will focus on the theory and practice of a variety of extracorporeal therapies, including intermittent hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, therapeutic plasma exchange/plasmapheresis, charcoal hemoperfusion, and aquapheresis. Training will also emphasize the proper management of complex nephrology cases.

The hemodialysis unit at ACCESS has the following equipment: Phoenix intermittent hemodialysis machine; Prismaflex continuous renal replacement and therapeutic plasma exchange machine; Prisma continuous renal replacement and therapeutic plasma exchange machine; and Aquadex aquapheresis machine.  The hemodialysis unit at ACCESS has enjoyed exponential growth over the past year, operating in a geographical location that hosts an educated referral and client base with the resources to pursue the most advanced veterinary therapies.

The fellow will be mentored closely with training and supervision in the management of nephrology and urology cases. The initial months’ training will provide the fundamental knowledge and experience to be able to perform extracorporeal treatment independently.

In addition to training in nephrology and extracorporeal therapies, the fellow will be encouraged and expected to participate in procedures performed by the interventional radiology/endoscopy department that relate to upper/lower urinary track pathology. Our interventional endoscopy/radiology department collaborates frequently with the nephrology service, providing complete renal and urologic care for patients with upper urinary tract (obstructive disease). The interventional radiology/endoscopy service performs a wide variety of urologic and non-urologic procedure, including laser ablations and lithotripsy, endoluminal stenting, and coil/chemical embolizations. The fellow will also be encouraged and expected to participate in the training of 5 emergency/critical care residents and a fellow in interventional radiology/endoscopy.

ACCESS boasts a truly unique culture and management structure in the current veterinary landscape dominated by corporate specialty veterinary medicine. We are independently owned and operated, and our founder, Dr. Rich Mills, places the utmost importance on a cooperative and collaborative working environment at every level of the practice. Constructive ideas and independent thought are enthusiastically encouraged.

We are at the heart of one of the largest, most progressive and rapidly expanding veterinary specialty referral facilities in Los Angeles. Our practice is part of a 33,000 square foot, multi-specialty group, which includes specialists in critical care, cardiology, nephrology (dialysis), dentistry, dermatology, exotics, internal medicine, interventional radiology/endoscopy, nuclear medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, radiation oncology, radiology, and surgery. We practice in a rich and rewarding environment where patient care can be optimized and learning is continuous. This type of collaborative medicine is rare outside of a university setting. We have extensive diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring capabilities, and utilize the best equipment available. Our in-house diagnostic laboratory and imaging equipment includes a complete laboratory (CBC/chemistry/Criticare Express-Nova/I-stat/coagulation analyzer), monitoring (ETCO2/pulse oximetry/NIBP/invasive BP/telemetry, cardiac catheterization), digital radiography, and color flow Doppler ultrasound (Phillips IE33, GE Logiq S7 and GE Logiq P6), fluoroscopy (GE OEC 9600 C-arm), GE 1.5 tesla MRI, and GE 16 slice CT.  Our facility offers therapeutic mechanical ventilation (Pulmonetics and Siemens ventilators) and one of the only SRS linear accelerators in private practice.
