    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Staff Veterinarians

    JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develop and manage medical protocols including exams, treatments, drug usage, and surgery for all PHS programs including but not limited to wellness clinic, spay/neuter efforts, shelter clinic, wildlife program, intake medical exam and process and treatments, public, placement and animal cruelty programs. Set high quality standards of care. Adhere to the highest ethical standards and ensure that veterinary care is provided in a safe, competent, professional, compassionate and humane manner with the goal of meeting the 5 freedoms.
    • Oversee medical protocols by enforcing standards, creating new protocols as necessary, and ensuring goals and objectives are met through process and program development, and implementation and team work with other departments.  
    • Oversee the implementation and establishment of approved policies and procedures for effective disease control/management, treatment and surgery, the use, control and recording of drugs, and supplies used in the Veterinary Health department. Develops medical protocols that ensure all sheltered animals receive exams, laboratory testing, treatments, surgery, medication, vaccination and euthanasia and that it is administered in a humane manner.
    • Develop protocols and oversee implementation of surgical programs for PHS. Create medical standards for a high volume spay/neuter environment.
    • Develop and oversee protocols on public and shelter medical programs including shelter medicine, Internal and external wellness clinics, Helping PAWS program, and other programs as appropriate.
    • Perform sterilization and veterinary healthcare of animals as needed including shelter and wellness clinic surgeries, vaccinations, exams and treatment for owned and shelter animals. Identify signs of illness and address symptoms as needed.
    • Oversee medical procedures, treatments and drugs which include strategic insight and planning to help bring innovative and progressive ideas related to animal health and veterinary care to the organization.
    • Provide professional advice and opinions regarding the development and implementation of shelter and clinic programs. Work closely with Directors to make the flow of animals smooth and efficient and make recommendations for great animal husbandry of sheltered animals. Supervise and perform healthcare to ensure the sheltered animals receive humane care. Analyze medical trends and make recommendations as appropriate for herd health management and individual animal care needs. Identify and address challenges, and ensure adherence to PHS policies and protocols.  Oversee goals and objectives, process development and philosophies.
    • Manage staff veterinarians including hiring, terminations, payroll, scheduling, training, counseling, and general productivity of the workforce. Supervise the professional development of Veterinarians and keep abreast of veterinary and shelter medicine trends.
    • Assist Animal Control in medical forensics for cruelty investigations which includes performing physical examinations/necropsies, developing treatment protocols, providing testimony and documentation of the condition of animals that are involved in cruelty investigations. Assists with the coordination of external resources related to the development of veterinary related evidence as needed. Testify in court, if requested.
    • Create protocols and perform medical care and triage in emergency situations. Create protocols and oversight on after-hours emergency veterinary response.
    • Oversee, review, and train staff on the Certified Euthanasia Technician training materials. Develop curriculum and train staff in medical care and protocols. Evaluate, create and coordinate training and handle the development needs of staff and volunteers to assure professional standards of performance.
    • Maintain the PHS premise and drug permits and ensure that PHS is always in compliance with requirements. Ensure that PHS is adhering to all applicable state and federal laws governing the practice of veterinary medicine. Must maintain and provide proof of current veterinary license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of California.
    • Create and manage budget allocations, fund balances and related financial activities as it relates to the departmental goals and programs.
    • Ensure medical records are kept in a consistent format.  Create and analyze data and reports, as required. Must ensure all staff maintain strict confidentiality on client, patient, and donor information.
    • Work with the Director of Veterinary Care to ensure inventory and equipment is maintained and staff technicians are trained and using the highest and most efficient medical care protocols.
    • Oversight of veterinary and veterinary technician internship programs. Must be willing to act as teacher and mentor to students, employees and volunteers.
    • Assure a safe working environment and actively participate in PHS safety programs.
    • Represent PHS at outside meetings, liaison with other organizations and contractors/partners, and serve as professional liaison to veterinary community.
    • Act as a speaker and spokesperson with groups of people including public, staff, media, and law enforcement agencies, concerning the society’s services and veterinary care, when assigned.
    • Promote a positive relationship with the general public, volunteers, and staff while promoting the society’s programs, policies and philosophies.  Address customer complaints related to the Veterinary Health department and its staff.  Ensure a high quality of customer service is given.
    • Ensure a positive, educational approach to customer service with a goal of educating the public and keeping animals in homes as appropriate. Promote positive relations with the general public, volunteers and staff while promoting the Society’s programs, policies and philosophies. Address customer complaints.
    • Uphold Pasadena Humane Society’s mission and contribute to building a culture of philanthropy. 
    • Ensure a safe working environment and actively participate in PHS safety programs.
    • Participate as needed in special department projects. 
    • Work as a team member with other departmental managers.
