Join Dr. Richard Harvey and the MiDOG team as they explore recent discoveries on the density, diversity, and core constituents of the bacterial and fungal microbiome in healthy dogs. Learn how temporal and quantitative NGS data can redefine what we know about cutaneous flora, inform diagnostics, and influence treatment strategies in veterinary dermatology. They will also be discussing recent publications in collaboration with the AVMA:
- A 5-month Temporal, Quantitative Study Investigating the Core Microbiome
- Quantifying the Mycobiome and its Major Constituents on the Skin of 20 Normal Dogs
- Quantification of the Bacterial Flora and its Major Constituents on the Abdominal Skin of Clinically Healthy Dogs
Presented By:
DR. RICHARD HARVEY, BVSc, DVD, DipECVD, PhD, FRSB, FRCVS | Head of Dermatology- Willows Referral Center, Solihull, England
Dr. Richard Harvey is a board-certified European Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology with nearly 45 years of clinical and research experience. He is now retired but served as Head of Dermatology at Willows Referral Centre in the UK and is a scientific advisor for MiDOG Animal Diagnostics. Dr. Harvey earned his veterinary degree from the University of Bristol and completed his PhD with a focus on dermatological microbiology. He holds both UK and European Diplomas in Veterinary Dermatology and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on the skin microbiome, dysbiosis, and fungal diagnostics. His research explores the dynamic interplay between bacterial and fungal flora on canine skin, especially how next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies can inform diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes for chronic skin conditions. Dr. Harvey is internationally recognized for his work on otitis, atopic dermatitis, and antimicrobial stewardship.
DR. JANINA KRUMBECK, PhD | CEO and Co-Founder- MiDOG Animal Diagnostics
Dr. Janina Krumbeck is the CEO and Co-Founder of MiDOG Animal Diagnostics LLC, based in Tustin, California. She leads efforts to provide veterinarians with innovative diagnostic tools aimed at improving the detection of infectious diseases in companion and wildlife animals.
Utilizing molecular DNA sequencing to study the animal microbiome, Dr. Krumbeck has authored several peer-reviewed publications on the microbiomes of animals in both health and disease contexts.
She earned her PhD in genetics, cell, and molecular biology with a focus on microbial gastrointestinal ecology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and holds a Master’s degree in genetics and applied microbiology from RWTH Aachen University in Germany. With over 15 years of experience studying microbe-host interactions, Dr. Krumbeck is dedicated to applying current knowledge of the pet microbiome to enhance infectious disease diagnostics and promote responsible antibiotic use.
