Feline Diabetes: A New Chapter

In this session, we will review our current understanding of feline diabetes mellitus and discuss the impacts of insulin resistance and glucose toxicity on pancreatic function. A brief summary of previous efforts to manage diabetic cats with oral medications will be followed by an overview of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and their effects in this species. Velagliflozin oral solution will be introduced and insights shared regarding appropriate patient selection, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Information on when to consider a switch to insulin and how to make this change will be provided.
**Speaker Update**
Speaker: VMD, PhD, DACVIM (SAIM)
Bio: Dr. Cynthia Ward received her VMD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed residency training in small animal internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Teaching Hospital and a reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She was on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Georgia (UGA) and is currently professor emerita at UGA. Dr. Ward is the founder of the UGA Veterinary Diabetes Clinic and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine specializing in small animal internal medicine.
