Navigating “No” in the Veterinary Field

No matter what role you play in the veterinary setting, unless you’re the patient, you are a human. Humans are social creatures, whether introverted or extroverted, who naturally thrive on reciprocation and would prefer to avoid conflict. Humans also have limits – physical, mental and emotional. Often, those of us in the veterinary field ignore these limits in order to please others, to reciprocate, and to avoid a possible negative outcome that is likely exaggerated in our own minds. The truth is, NOT saying “No” can result in far worse outcomes for you, your patients and your team. Humans, especially the veterinary type, don’t like to say “No” because we worry that we will be seen as lazy, unhelpful, or downright mean. We might also fear saying “No” for financial reasons, such as the fear of losing our job or compromising the bottom line. Or, perhaps we are highly susceptible to guilt and saying “No” adds one more link to our chain of internal burdens. It’s time for us to work on this together,  as a field — to recognize that saying “No” actually opens up possibilities, allows us to focus on priorities, and helps us to honor our limits so that we can create a sustainable career path.  In this session, we will discuss how to navigate giving and receiving “No” with empathy, compassion and a keener eye for alternative solutions when we know “Yes” is not the healthiest or best answer.
