ALERT!

As the fires continue to rage throughout Southern California and San Diego County, many of you have been affected personally and professionally.  First, we’d like to thank you for all of your efforts to protect the animals in the affected areas.

We want to assure you that the CVMA Veterinary Disaster Response Coordinator (VDRC) program is in effect.  County VDRCs and their teams are working to care for evacuated animals.  The CVMA staff has been in contact with members of our Disaster Preparedness Committee and VDRCs to help provide information and supplies.

We have been approached by veterinary supply companies, veterinarians and government agencies offering to provide assistance where needed.  However, we need your help. Please contact the CVMA office or your local county coordinator if you can provide any assistance, such as:

·         Facilities to house displaced animals – large and small

·         Veterinary services – either in your hospital or at an evacuation center

·         Veterinary staff to assist in treatments

·         People who can provide basic care for the animals – feed, clean, exercise

·         Any updated information you have on affected areas, road conditions, evacuations, new animal shelter locations, etc.

Finally, if you need help or supplies, let us know.

You may contact the CVMA directly at 800.655.2862 or e-mail us at disaster@cvma.net.

You can also contact the VDRC for your county.  There is a link to the complete list of VDRCs on the CVMA homepage at www.cvma.net along with additional information on the fires.

Pet Food Recall

Various pet food manufacturers, including Menu Foods, Del Monte Pet Products, Hills Pet Nutrition, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, Sunshine Mills, Inc., and Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc, have recalled a variety of their products because of concerns about contamination of an imported wheat gluten ingredient and, more recently, imported rice protein concentrate, with melamine. Melamine is an industrial chemical used in plastics and fertilizer.

Current Status

Although still under investigation, it now appears that the combination of melamine and cyanuric acid has been linked to the unusual outbreak of acute renal failure in cats and dogs that have eaten the suspect products.

Toxic Crystals identified by University of Guelph

The recent House of Delegates meeting we were given a presentation on Pet food recall results. The active  toxin has been described as a crystalline precipitate in the kidneys and seen as crystalluria called:

Melamine +  Cyanuric Acid = Melamic Cyanurate.

SCVMA Chapter Meeting Schedule

February and March 2008

            President's Perspective

 January 2008

Serving as President

Serving as President of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association marks the final stage of an incredible journey that began years ago by simply attending a chapter meeting. It has been a journey filled with personal and professional growth, challenges, enlightenment, heated discussions, friendship, late nights, success, challenges, accomplishment, problems, laughter, frustration, solutions, challenges, conflict, resolution, compromise, and, did I mention. . .challenges.

I have been graciously mentored and have learned much from dedicated SCVMA Trustees who enthusiastically embrace all of the challenges that affect veterinarians – it has been a fantastic and extremely gratifying journey of service to our profession, and it has truly been an honor. But, it’s not over. . .

As the New Year approaches and we look back at our accomplishments, we must also pause and consider the enormous and inevitable changes that will occur within our profession during the coming years and ask ourselves, are we ready? Are you ready?

Headlines across the country are exploding with important issues affecting our profession; State Board investigations and inspections, laws regarding veterinarians and animal abuse, the Farm Animal Confinement Initiative, the Anti-Declaw Ordinance, AB 1634 – the mandatory spay and neuter Bill that will be re-introduced in January, laws providing public access to state board complaints prior to establishment of wrong doing, and laws requiring practitioners to obtain informed consent from every client on “all” viable treatment options and procedures.

Do you know how these issues affect you? Our new Executive Director, Dr. Peter Weinstein, has been Past President of both the SCVMA and the CVMA and he brings to the SCVMA a passion for veterinary medicine and an intimate knowledge of the problems facing our profession at the local, state, and national levels. The Board of Trustees and Dr. Weinstein will provide you with the information needed to understand these issues
and make informed decisions. In turn, we need your input as these important issues emerge and are decided so that we can accurately represent our members.

The challenges facing veterinary medicine, both locally and nationally, demand that we be educated, inspired, dedicated and in control of our professional future. The SCVMA’s longevity and shear size (we are 100 years old and 1200 members strong), along with our traditional role of responsibility, bestow on the SCVMA an enormous level of influence on the veterinary profession and on the public.

I encourage all of you to use this influence, become educated and actively involved in the SCVMA. Begin your own journey of public service to the veterinary profession and help direct your future and the future of our profession.

I look forward to serving you this year and hope to see all of you at the installation on February 23, 2008!
