Managing Chronic Kidney Disease in Canines and Felines: Pitfalls and Best Practices

This 50-minute lecture will focus on recognition of at-risk patients with early biochemical markers or diagnostic imaging findings suggestive of renal insufficiency, implementing a standard approach to renal patient surveillance, and developing a comprehensive approach to nutritional and therapeutic management of chronic kidney disease.

By the end of this lecture, attendees should be able to:

a.       Identify patients vulnerable to chronic kidney disease based on medical history, metabolic trends, and diagnostic imaging findings including ultrasound assessment

b.    Recognize risk factors which may accelerate renal damage

c.     Develop monitoring protocols for patients with static versus progressive chronic kidney disease

d.     Recommend adequate nutrition plans for early and late-stage renal disease patients

e.     Implement therapeutics targeting major adverse conditions associated with renal disease including anemia, hypokalemia, hypertension, proteinuria

 

Speaker: Dr. Goldman, DVM, DACVIM

Dr. Goldman, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, is a Maryland native, and grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. She earned her BS degree and DVM from Virginia Tech and remains an avid fan. She completed an internship at Carolina Veterinary Specialists, followed by an internal medicine residency and Masters Degree in Veterinary Science at Purdue University. During her residency, Dr. Goldman developed an interest in nephrology and minimally invasive urology, and pioneered non-surgical alternatives for management of lower urinary tract disorders as an associate internist at South Carolina Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care in Columbia, SC 2008-2021. Dr. Goldman joined Oncura Veterinary Partners in November 2021 and is currently providing small animal internal medicine telemedicine consulting throughout North America. She is a member of the Veterinary Interventional Radiology and Interventional Endoscopy Society, Past Chair of the SAIM Residency Training Program Committee for ACVIM, and is a past-president of the Greater Columbia Association of Veterinarians. She lectures on the local, state, and national levels and has published articles in veterinary gastroenterology and urology and is co-author of a chapter in the textbook Nephrology and Urology of Small Animals. After Hours: Corinne enjoys golf and traveling abroad, hiking in the upstate and the Blue Ridge, exploring local art galleries, and weekends on Seabrook Island, SC.
