Summary: Will cover a brief introduction on dog heartworm in mosquitoes from other areas including Los Angeles County, introduce OC Vector Control to cover what services are provided, as well as go over some of the testing Vector Control done in mosquitoes that were collected in Orange County and the findings of our efforts as they relate to dog heartworm. This presentation will provide a review of the heartworm lifecycle, disease, resistance, and ways to improve owner compliance in dogs and cats.

Speakers:

Andrew Schreibman, DVM

Dr. Schreibman earned his DVM from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University, completed a residency program in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Missouri, and served as a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Intern at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine with the University of Illinois.  Currently he is Senior Professional Services Veterinarian for Boehringer Ingelheim serving the Southern California & Hawaii district.  Dr. Schreibman is an avid runner and baseball umpire.

 

Laura Krueger, MPH

Laura Krueger is a self-proclaimed hard-kore bug nerd who believes the West Coast is truly the Pest Coast. She is a Board Certified Entomologist (Medical and Veterinary Specialty) employed by the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District and specializes in the control of mosquitoes, fleas, rats, West Nile virus and flea-borne typhus. Laura began her career as an Entomologist/Technical Trainer with Western Exterminator Company and is licensed as a Pest Control Adviser, Qualified Applicator, and Vector Control Technician in California. Laura received her Masters of Public Health from Yale University and a Bachelors of Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Daisy Flores Rangel, PhD, Microbiologist

Daisy is the Microbiologist for Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District and focuses on testing and researching various vectors that help spread public health diseases. She has a passion for learning and discovering as she has worked with a wide array of species, believing that life in all organisms is beautiful and worth exploring. She received her Bachelors and Masters in Biology from California State University, Long Beach where she studied the molecular impacts of light on the plant Arabidopsis thaliana,  investigated the immune system of the white leghorn chicken at the Institute of Neurobiology in Queretaro, Mexico and contributed to our understand of lung cancer by working with rodents for her dissertation work where she received her Ph.D. in Genetic, Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Southern California.
