The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine has published its most recent consensus statement on leptospirosis in dogs. In this session which combines review of the consensus statement with practical applications, discover what conclusions the 12-member panel was able to reach regarding current epidemiology, recognizing the clinical presentation, forming a differential diagnosis and choosing your diagnostics for leptospirosis. Perhaps most importantly, learn what the panel concluded with regards to prevention of this disease in our canine companions.

Program Agenda:

  • How is an ACVIM consensus statement created?
  • Getting to know the pathogen – how is Leptospira named, where is it found, and who are the most important reservoir hosts?
  • Who is at risk for leptospirosis?
  • What are the recommendations for diagnosis of leptospirosis, including understanding the newly created case definition for leptospirosis.
  • Recommendations for treatment of leptospirosis.
  • Recommendations for prevention of leptospirosis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop talking points for discussing the risk of leptospirosis with pet owners.
  • Gain familiarity with the many possible clinical presentations of leptospirosis.
  • Recognize the capabilities of individual and combined diagnostics for use in confirming a case of leptospirosis, and appreciate the components of the formal leptospirosis case definition.
