Public Health and Disease Implications of Dog Importation: Part 1- Asia

Dogs imported from other countries may be infected with diseases that are not normally found in Los Angeles County. This lecture will focus on diseases that may be imported in dogs from Asia, and will focus primarily on leishmaniasis, influenza, and severe fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome.

 


Speakers: Emily Beeler, DVM, MPH, DACVPM and Michelle Chang, DVM, MPH

 

 

Bio: Dr. Emily Beeler, DVM, MPH, DACVPM works for the Veterinary Public Health Program, with a focus on animal disease surveillance and emerging infectious diseases. Before joining public health in 2005, she worked for 9 years as a small animal general medicine and surgery practitioner in the South Bay area of LA County.

 

 

Bio: Dr. Michelle Chang, DVM, MPH is a public health veterinarian at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. She has overseen the rabies, animal bites, and animal importation sections of the Veterinary Public Health Program. Prior to working in public health she worked in small animal practice. She received her veterinary degree from UC Davis, and both her bachelor’s degree and Master of Public Health degree from UC Berkeley.
