An Affordable New DNA-Based Blood Test to Detect Cancer in Dogs

Description: Early cancer detection matters. That’s why we, as humans, have routine screening tests like mammograms and colonoscopies – to look for cancer when we’re healthy – with the goal of finding it early, treating it, and giving us more quality time with the ones we love. Our patients deserve no different. For almost 3 years now, state-of-the-art cancer detection with a simple blood draw – also called “liquid biopsy” – has been revolutionizing how (and when) cancer is detected in dogs. This session will review the evolution of DNA-based liquid biopsy testing since it was introduced to the veterinary field in 2021, with a focus on newly-available options for early cancer detection in 2024. We will discuss how early detection is making a difference in the lives of dogs, their families, and their veterinary care teams, by finding cancer earlier, while their tails are still wagging.

Speaker: Dr. Suzy Gray, BSc(Hons), BVetMed (Hons), MFA, Dip ACVIM (SAIM), Director of Clinical Support

Bio: Dr. Gray graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London and completed her internship and residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She was board-certified in small animal internal medicine in 2004 and has over twenty years of experience in private specialty practice.  Dr. Gray is the director of clinical support at PetDx and provides support and consultation for veterinarians using OncoK9. She is also involved in clinical trials at Pet Dx. Dr. Gray also holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing and has written a memoir. The animals in her house easily outnumber the people with three cats, two dogs, and five crested geckos. The newest addition to the family is a horse, but he doesn’t live in the house because there’s not enough room!
